so you wanna run the 2026 NYC marathon
💨👟 9+1 tips, qualifying races remaining in 2025, & standby lists 💨👟
Hi everyone, so you all decided to try to complete 9+1 late in the year, but never fear I’m here to help.
⭐️ First thing to do - sign up and pay to become a NYRR member. You need to pay the membership fee to be able to do 9+1. Once you sign up you’ll also get other perks such as member only races, standby lists for races, and advance race registration.

⭐️ Next, go through the list of remaining 9+1 qualifying races and pick out 10 (one for backup) that you plan to run. Once the registration for these races open, this will make it faster for you to buy and check out.

⭐️ Since you’re a member now you have access to standby lists for sold out races and can sign up for a chance to be selected to run that race. I’ve never done this so I don’t know what the chances are of getting selected, but doesn’t hurt to join!

⭐️ Finally, you need to start stalking the volunteer page on NYRR. This is extremely important because you need
the +1 volunteer completion and volunteer spots are harder to get. This is also where planning out your race calendar in advance comes in handy as you will already know which races you cannot volunteer for as you will already be running the race.
Personally I’d recommend trying to get a spot in a shorter race if possible, but at this point it’s better to grab whatever you can. If a better opportunity pops up, you can always cancel a volunteer spot you’ve already claimed without any repercussions.

I think that’s it for now, I’ll send out updates as the race registration windows open and maybe I will also make a post about my fav shoes lol. TY to all 3 of you for reading and I’m very excited for the 2026 marathon!!!!!
